AAC Blocks vs Red Clay Bricks: A Cost and Carbon Comparison

Red clay brick has been the default walling material for generations, but it is increasingly being challenged on three fronts: cost, construction speed and embodied carbon.

AAC blocks are roughly a third of the weight of clay bricks for a comparable wall thickness, which reduces transport cost and structural load. Their larger unit size means fewer joints and faster laying — typically two to three times faster per square metre. On the carbon side, the autoclaving process consumes significantly less energy than brick kiln firing, and many AAC formulations use fly ash, a byproduct that would otherwise go to landfill.

None of this makes brick obsolete everywhere, but for developers optimising a project's overall carbon and cost profile, AAC is increasingly the more defensible default.
